By Tim Lawhern, President of the International Hunter Education Association (IHEA)

Ensure the young people graduating hunter safety courses in 2010 and beyond are the safest hunters yet while making effective use of your PR funds with the new IHEA Training Gun set, produced by Remington Outdoor Foundation.

The five firearms in the set include every action covered in IHEA's curriculum, plus they are completely disabled to be nonfunctioning so students can receive hands on training with a tool that simulates an actual firearm in every way except for live fire. The IHEA Training Gun Set eliminates liability issues because they are not capable of discharging during training or any other time.

"You have to wonder what was going through their heads," Nevada's top game warden, Rob Buonamici, says of poachers.

Deer, elk and even raccoons have a new type of predator to worry about: Poachers who kill increasingly for the thrill of it.

Scott Talbott, an assistant division chief with Wyoming's Fish and Game Department, calls it "wanton destruction" that goes beyond shooting.

Poachers run down deer with cars or snowmobiles, and chase raccoons, then beat them to death with clubs. They also shoot deer, elk and antelope, sometimes removing valuable antlers but often leaving the carcass to rot on the ground, Talbott and other wildlife officials said.

"It's thrill killing — people just going out and killing stuff," Talbott said. "We have seen a significant increase of that in Wyoming. It's disturbing."
